Black Sediment in Your Water Tank? Here Is What It Is
Black particles in your water have three usual sources, and one of them means a fitting is failing.
Black flakes or grains in your bucket, in the washing machine filter, or at the bottom of a glass — this is a symptom worth identifying precisely, because one of the three causes is a component failing rather than dirt accumulating.
The three sources
Manganese deposits. Common in Delhi borewell water. Manganese oxidises into fine black particles that settle as a dark layer on the tank base. Harmless in small amounts, ugly in large ones, and it stains laundry.
Degraded rubber. Black flakes that are soft, flexible and squash between your fingers are almost always a perishing gasket, washer or flexible hose. This one is not a cleaning problem — the component needs replacing, or it will keep shedding.
Anaerobic sludge. Long-undisturbed sediment turns black and often smells of sulphur. This is the layer that produces the rotten-egg smell, and it means the tank has gone well past its cleaning interval.

What to do
For manganese and anaerobic sludge, a proper clean with vacuum extraction resolves it — and if manganese is a recurring feature of your borewell supply, a sediment pre-filter on the inlet cuts how fast it rebuilds. For rubber flakes, cleaning the tank achieves nothing until the failing gasket or hose is replaced.
