Low Water Pressure in Delhi? Tank Sediment May Be Why
Before you blame the pump or the municipal supply, check the two places sediment actually restricts flow.
Pressure drops gradually, so people adapt to it and only notice when a shower becomes unusable. Often the cause is not the supply and not the pump — it is accumulated material in the path.
Where sediment restricts flow
The outlet mouth. The tank outlet sits slightly above the base, exactly where the sediment layer builds. Once the silt line rises past the outlet, every litre leaving the tank drags through it — and the mouth itself partially occludes.
Scale inside the pipe run. In hard-water areas the internal bore narrows over years. Halving the effective diameter cuts flow far more than half.
Diagnosing it without a plumber
- Pressure poor at every tap, all the time → tank outlet or main pipe run
- Pressure poor only when the tank is low → sediment at outlet level, confirmed
- Pressure poor at one tap only → that tap’s aerator or its branch line
- Pressure fine on ground floor, poor upstairs → pump or head issue, not the tank
- Gritty residue in tap aerators → sediment is definitely travelling from the tank
The fix, in order
Clean the tank first with proper sludge extraction — it is the cheapest step and often the only one needed. Then clear the tap aerators, which will have caught whatever travelled. If pressure is still poor after both, the problem is in the pipe run or the pump, and that is a plumbing job.
Do not start by replacing the pump. We have attended plenty of Delhi homes where a new pump was bought, made no difference, and the actual cause was four inches of silt sitting over the tank outlet.
