Monsoon Water Tank Cleaning in Delhi: Why It Matters

Monsoon Water Tank Cleaning in Delhi: Why It Matters

Turbidity spikes, seepage into sumps and mosquito breeding. The post-monsoon clean is the most valuable one of the year.

If you only clean once a year, do it in September or October. The monsoon deposits more into a Delhi tank in eight weeks than the rest of the year manages combined.

What the monsoon does

Supply turbidity rises. Heavy rain raises suspended solids in the raw water reaching treatment plants. Some of it comes through, and all of it settles in your tank.

Sumps take seepage. An underground reservoir with a hairline crack or a poorly sealed cover takes in groundwater when the water table rises. That water is untreated and carries whatever was in the soil around it. This is the most serious monsoon risk and the least visible.

Mosquito breeding peaks. Aedes breeds in clean standing water. An open or cracked tank lid during monsoon is a dengue breeding site, and Delhi’s dengue season runs directly off this.

Humidity accelerates biofilm. Warm, wet, and water sitting longer because usage drops — good conditions for growth.

The pre-monsoon checklist

  • Inspect and reseal the sump cover — this is the important one
  • Check the overhead tank lid gasket and hinge
  • Mesh every overflow pipe
  • Clear roof drainage away from the tank base
  • Look for hairline cracks in RCC tank walls and the sump neck

The post-monsoon clean

Book it in September or October, once the rain has largely finished. Sump first, then overhead tanks. Expect the sump to hold noticeably more silt than at any other time of year — and if it holds anything that smells of soil or sewage, tell us before we start, because that is a seepage investigation rather than a routine clean.

If your sump takes seepage

Cleaning it is necessary but not sufficient. The crack or the unsealed cover has to be fixed, or the same thing happens next July. We will tell you what we find; sealing work is a civil job and we will say so rather than cleaning the same problem twice a year indefinitely.
