Oily Film on Your Water Tank? Causes & Fixes
A rainbow sheen on the water surface is either bacterial or genuine contamination — and the two look different.
An iridescent or greasy-looking film on the surface of your stored water has two very different explanations, and telling them apart takes one poke with a stick.
The stick test
- The film cracks into angular plates → bacterial. An iron-oxidising bacterial mat, common on borewell supply. Unpleasant but not a chemical contaminant
- The film swirls back together smoothly → genuine oil or hydrocarbon. This is contamination and needs the source found
If it is bacterial
Iron bacteria colonise water with dissolved iron and form a surface mat plus a slimy coating on walls and fittings. A full clean — extraction, jetting, disinfection with proper contact time — clears it. If your supply is iron-rich it will slowly return, so shorten the cleaning interval to every four months and consider an inlet filter.
If it is genuine oil
Stop using the water for drinking and cooking immediately. Common sources are a failing submersible pump leaking lubricant, motor oil carried in on a poorly maintained tanker, or contaminated equipment used during a previous "cleaning" — this last one is more common than it should be, and is a direct consequence of using uncleaned hoses.
A tank with hydrocarbon contamination needs full drainage, extraction, repeated jetting and multiple rinse cycles, and the source must be identified first — otherwise you clean it and it returns on the next fill.
Prevention
- Use tanker suppliers who can tell you when their tanker was last cleaned
- Service submersible pumps on schedule; watch for seal wear
- Ask any cleaner whether their hoses and heads are sanitised between jobs
- Keep the lid sealed — surface films often start with airborne deposition
