Separate the potable line
The most valuable change on most farmhouses is not more cleaning — it is separating drinking-water storage from irrigation and pool supply. Once the potable line has its own tank, it can be maintained to a proper standard without cleaning tens of thousands of litres of garden water to the same specification. It is a plumbing change that pays for itself in cleaning costs alone.

The seasonal-property trap
A farmhouse used at weekends has water standing warm and still from Sunday evening to Friday. That is close to ideal biofilm conditions in summer. Either drain the potable tanks between visits, or accept a four-month cleaning interval rather than six.
