Water Tank Cleaning vs Water Purifier — You Need Both
The most common reason Delhi homes skip tank cleaning is an RO in the kitchen. Here is what the RO does not cover.
"We have an RO" is the single most common reason we hear for not cleaning a tank. It is a reasonable-sounding argument that does not survive contact with the plumbing diagram.
What an RO covers
One tap. Usually the kitchen. Roughly two to three per cent of the water your household actually uses.
What it does not cover
- Every bathroom tap and shower — skin and eye contact, and inhalation of aerosol in a hot shower
- The washing machine — clothes washed in sediment-heavy water, then worn
- The kitchen tap used for washing vegetables — very few people wash produce at the RO outlet
- Ice, and water for pets
- Utensil washing
- Brushing teeth — near-universally done at the bathroom tap
The RO suffers too
ROs are not designed to handle a heavy sediment load. Fed from a silty tank, the pre-filters clog far faster, the membrane life shortens, and the running cost rises. Cleaning the tank is the cheapest maintenance you can do for the purifier itself.

The RO is the last layer, not the only one. Running it as the only layer means every other water use in the house is unprotected, and the RO itself is working harder than it should.
The cost comparison
An RO costs ₹12,000–₹25,000 plus annual servicing. Two tank cleans a year cost ₹1,800. The tank clean protects the whole house and extends the RO’s life. It is not a choice between them, and if it were, the tank would be the better buy.
